Alnico Magnets
Alnico magnets derived
their name from their main ingredients namely Aluminum, Nickel
and Cobalt. Among all the available magnetic materials they have
the most temperature stability. Alnico magnets perform extremely
well for applications that are exposed to temperatures above
400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Alnico magnets come in
grades 2, 5 and 8, both sintered and cast. Sintered alnico magnets
have slightly lower magnetic properties, however they have excellent
mechanical properties. Alnico magnets are excellent choices for
applications involving vibration and shock as they have good
resistance to demagnetization.
Alnico magnets come in
a variety of shapes and sizes. Some of the common shapes are
horseshoe, button, shallow pot, ring, rectangular and bar magnets.
The shallow pot and button magnets come with keeper plates and
can be supplied with either a red or blue painted finish. Cast
Alnico 5 is the most commonly used in the industry due to its
high energy product of 5 MGOe and high inductive nature.
To obtain optimum performance
of Alnico 5 the magnetic length should be approximately 5 times
the diameter for rods, or for rectangular magnets length should
be 5 times diameter of an equivalent circle.
Alnico magnets are extremely difficult to machine as they are
very hard and brittle. They should be case or sintered as close
as possible to the required dimensions in order to minimize grinding
to finished dimensions.
Alnico magnets are derived
from Aluminum, Nickel and Cobalt used in their manufacture. They
perform well in applications exceeding exposure of
400 Degrees Fahrenheit.
